Identifying Perceived vs. Actual Stress

Often, high-performing clients have been slowly sinking into stress and burnout-related indicators for quite a while, sometimes years. For many clients, building a framework that “sorts” the stressors and allows them to put data to their lived experience is important. Recently, I coached an executive healthcare leader, and one of our sessions focused on perceived versus actual stress.

When she recognized how significantly her lack of confidence and efficacy was translating to perceived stress (how someone feels about their stress), something clicked for her, and she realized how much more control she actually has. We worked on some mindset and deeper identity schemas, and she beautifully kicked much of her perceived stress to the curb.

Stress Management Through Holistic Practices

As a therapist, I regularly coach clients on how they can manage their stress better and improve their overall well-being.

One of my recent consultations was with a client who works as a director at a large conglomerate in Asia. The client came with complaints of insomnia and losing appetite, but despite consulting many doctors, no medicine had been able to cure his condition.

Upon further investigation, it was clear he was suffering due to heightened stress. Together, we underwent a three-session treatment, which consisted of meditation, a gratitude journal, and progressive muscle relaxation exercises, among others. At the end of 1.5 months, the client reported feeling better overall, now that he was able to manage his stress better.

Routine and Mindfulness Boost Productivity

One client I worked with was a small-business owner in the UAE who was on the brink of burnout due to stress from rapid growth. Through stress-management coaching, we implemented daily routines focused on time-blocking, mindfulness techniques, and delegation strategies. Within three months, he reported improved mental clarity, better work-life balance, and a 30% increase in productivity. His overall well-being skyrocketed, and he even started taking more time for family and personal hobbies, which he hadn’t been able to do in years. Stress Symptom Clarity and Management

Clients suffering from high stress can often exhibit symptoms that are not always immediately linked to stress—either by themselves or by others. High stress can show up as exhaustion, apathy, frustration, irritability, and fatigue, to name a few examples. When I work with clients on stress management, my goal is to dig deep to understand the underlying causes (and there may be several!). Once the client has more clarity about their stressors, we begin to put a game plan together to address them.

In one example, a client came to me with high stress and burnout. They had walked away from a successful (but stressful) career that they loved but couldn’t see how they’d ever be able to manage their stress. Once we developed and practiced strategies around setting boundaries, self-care, maintaining support systems, and managing work-life balance, they were able to return to their career with a toolkit that allowed them to better manage their stress and began flourishing both at work and at home.

Sometimes, a pause is what is needed to take stock of the big picture so we can move forward in a healthier way.

Stress Understanding Leads to Personal Goals

We start to see the weight loss they want, even job salary increases, and more. If we are wrapped up in our stress, we do not perform as well.
